3 Things to Consider Before Painting Your House

Posted on March 26, 2021

Spring is here, which means it is prime time to paint your house! Before you jump into slapping your favorite color on the exterior of your house, though, there are a few things you need to consider. By taking the beginning slow, you can avoid quick-wearing paint, damage to your home, and even the possibility of having to paint over your hard work.

Unfortunately, painting a house is not a straightforward process. It requires a handful of knowledge and skills if you want your house to look as stunning as the day you got it. In this article, we will go over the top three things to consider before painting your house.

Neighborhood or HOA Restrictions

If you live in a homeowner association, or HOA, preparing to paint your house will have one additional, but vital, step. Most likely, they will have certain restrictions about the quality of paint you choose for your home. They may even have an array of colors you have to choose from. Failure to check in with your HOA can result in costly fines and the responsibility of painting over your work!

You may also want to check in with your state laws about painting houses. Typically, you will not need a permit or run into any restrictions from the state, but it is always easier to check first. Neighbors may also be good to consult. You don’t want everyone on the street resenting you for painting your house neon green.

Plan Around Your Plants

Mother Nature waits for no paint job. Your plants and trees would definitely not appreciate a coat of paint, though. So make sure to cover all of your leafy greens with plastic. If you paint in early spring, you might be able to avoid plants in full bloom.

Also try to plan ahead for a weekend with little chance of rain or snow and with lower humidity. It’s no secret that paint requires time to dry. However, you also don’t want to paint when it is too hot. Check what weather conditions are best for the paint you choose, but typically a shady day in the mid-50s will be ideal.

DIY Or Hire From Outside?

Last but not least, consider if you want to take on the exterior paint job by yourself or if you want to hire the pros. While there are benefits to both, hiring professional painters is typically cheaper, easier, and takes less time. If you choose to hire professionals, be sure to get an array of bids from your local painters. Check out their portfolios to find projects that look similar to your project. Painting your house is not something to take lightly, and doing your research can save you hundreds of dollars!
