Emerald Urethane Trim Paint by Sherwin Williams

Sherwin Williams new Alkyd Hybrid trim paint dries harder, self-levels without sagging and won’t amber over time. The Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is a hybrid, which means it tends to behave like an acrylic paint, but has all of the positives of an alkyd (oil based) paint. Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel dries in humid environments. Alkyd paints will experience prolonged drying periods in humid environments. Emerald has excellent blocking resistance and color and gloss retention on exteriors. If you are looking for the benefits of an Alkyd product but don’t want to deal with the ambering/yellowing, sagging, dry time or odor, Emerald is a good option. It can also be used on interiors and/or exteriors.

Lee: Hi, I’m Lee Sapata.

Vicki: And I’m Vicki Waterbury. We’re here with CertaPro Painters. We’ve been talking about wall paint and primers, and now we’re gonna talk about the trim paint. This is an Emerald product from Sherwin Williams. It’s called Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Can you tell me about it, Lee?

Lee: Well, sure, Vicki. This is what’s referred as a hybrid alkyd acrylic product. And basically, chemically, it’s both an acrylic and it’s an alkyd. And so it has a tendency to behave like an acrylic, but it has all the positive aspects of your alkyds, or what we use to know as oil-based products. Okay. So it’s going to dry harder, making it more durable, and it’s also going to self-level because that was one of the good things with alkyds or oil-based products. They dry a little bit slower because it takes longer to dry. They level out a little bit better, so this is gonna level out. Because it’s the urethane enamel part of it, it’s gonna be hard. So in the rooms that have carpeting and you’re vacuuming, the scuffing of the vacuum along the baseboard, this product is gonna perform beautifully in those environments. On hardwood floors, where you run the Swiffer on that floor, and it rubs against the quarter round or the baseboard, again, the urethane enamel is going to perform a lot better over the years than just a straight acrylic trim product will.

Vicki: Okay. So basically, the benefits of this is, being the hybrid product, it’s gonna apply like an acrylic, but it’s gonna perform like an alkyd, correct, with the oil base, have that strong performance.

Lee: Exactly. And the two other things. It’s a hybrid, so it’s not gonna dry as fast as the acrylic will. Okay? But it definitely won’t take as long as the oil will. Oils, in the past, if it were a very humid day, would take a while to dry. This one, you may have to wait a couple of hours before the next coat, but you won’t have to wait a full day or two like the oils used to perform. There’s one other thing about this product, being the alkyd that it does have, that was an issue in the past. Oil-based products in the past, especially whites, would have a tendency to yellow. After they’ve been on the surface seven, eight, nine years, the white, there’s a little bit of yellowness happening to it. Over the years, you’ve grown accustomed to it, so you don’t notice it as much, but if you were to pull the same color freshly made today, you’d notice that that is whiter than what’s been on your walls for seven or eight, nine years in the oil product. With this product, it’s gonna stay white.

Vicki: So it has good color retention?

Lee: It does, especially where the whites are involved.

Vicki: Right. Okay. And going back to when you were saying about drying, does this product, it has less of this sagging that you would see, or it doesn’t, the lower…where it starts to sag, the paint, it’s less than this?

Lee: Yes. The way it’s designed, it’s designed to be applied heavier. And again, it’s chemical makeup, it wants to bond and adhere to the surface. It gives you more dry time. It also levels out nicely, whereas with an alkyd, if you were to put it on heavy, as it dries, it’s literally kind of sagging on you, because of the weight of the paint. This doesn’t do that.

Vicki: Okay. And what sheens does this product come in?

Lee: Emerald comes in satin, semi-gloss, and gloss finish.

Vicki: Okay. Great. Let’s see, what surfaces can we paint this on? Is it interior, exterior?

Lee: This is an interior or exterior product. We really like to use it on interior trim. It has a great finish to it. It covers very well. So again, because of those two things, the way it covers, and the way it finishes when it dries, overall, it’s a great appearance. Customers like the way it looks.
