How to Create Curb Appeal for your Home

Posted on January 25, 2018

Whether you’re trying to sell your home or just make it the envy of the neighborhood, it’s important to make a great first impression. Having curb appeal can add thousands of dollars to the value of your home, and it makes decorating the interior that much easier. When the exterior is attractive and welcoming it helps set the tone for visitors before they even walk through the door. There are many ways to create a curb appeal and upgrade the exterior of your home. Here are a few ways to instantly make your home the most attractive house on the street.

Having shutters and a door that are painted a color that contrasts but complements the main color of the house is a great first step to improving the appearance of your home. Choosing the right color creates the wow factor that will separate your house from the rest. If you pick a color that really pops you can help blend it by also using that color in your landscape. If you have shutters, pick a color that is not as bright as the door but that still stands – don’t go overboard here. You want your home to look modern and welcoming, not like a funhouse.

Another great element to create curb appeal is by being creative with your house number. Nothing is more frustrating than when someone is trying to visit your home but can’t find it because the numbers are hidden or just hard to see. Some people feel that those numbers can take away from the overall look of the home but you shouldn’t believe them! Use these numbers as a way to be proud of your home’s identity. Make them large and give them character. They should be thought of as a great accent to the exterior of the home and not be hidden.

After you have done so much with landscape and paint to upgrade your home’s exterior you should want to show it off! Just because the sun goes down does not mean you have to wait till morning to appreciate it. Exterior lighting is an awesome way to increase your curb appeal through the night and it also increases the security of your home. The best lighting is along pathways and in front of doors and windows. It looks best to have some lighting against the house highlighting any special touches you have added, like your new house numbers for example.

There are many more ways to make your home more attractive, and you may not even need to add much. Maybe the place really just needs a fresh coat of paint and some new landscaping. The idea here is to never stop improving your home. Not only is it fun, but always improving your home’s curb appeal helps increase and/or maintain its value.
