5 Tips for Creating a Nature-Inspired Bedroom
Posted on September 29, 2017
Today’s trends are flooded with ideas of eating organic and surrounding ourselves with everything that is nature-inspired. One thing I have noticed though is that most of the nature-inspired objects are for the kitchen or other common areas in the home. If you have kept up with this trend you probably see things in your own home, but what does your bedroom look like? There are many ways to make a bedroom have that same rustic and natural feeling other than just filling it with a potted plant or two. Let’s explore some ways of how we can creatively incorporate nature and embrace the latest rustic trends in a bedroom.
1. Organic Bed and Bedding
Nothing compliments the organic style better in a bedroom than a bed that is dressed in organic materials. Organic cotton sheets can be found at almost any department store now and you can even get them in different colors. Also, avoid using a metal bed frame and try using a wood frame or even wooden pallets instead. To really compliment your new style, instead of buying a headboard make one using an antique door, old window frames, wooden pallets, or shutters. 2. Paint or Stain
When choosing how to finish your walls and furniture, you will need to have different approaches. For the walls choose a color that reflects your favorite part of nature. Sticking with cooler colors such as light blue and very light green are always winning colors if you don’t like warm colors such as tans and yellows. For the furniture, stain is your friend. Staining the wood helps give the room a finished look while still preserving the raw nature feeling.
3. It’s what you see.
A key part of having a nature-inspired bedroom is having enough visual support to feel like we are in fact outdoors. You can begin to do this by using daylight bulbs, which are almost identical to the sunlight during the day. Next, think of your wall art as an opportunity to get even more creative here. You can start with a basic canvas and use Modge Podge to glue leaves, petals, etc. to it. You can even skip the canvas and just use branches and other natural media as direct wall art as well.
4. It’s what you smell.
Nothing is better about a nature inspired room than if you close your eyes and can really feel like you are surrounded by fresh nature. Since you can’t always open your windows during the Winter take every opportunity you can during the year to air out your room. Filling the room with fresh air improves your indoor air quality and how relaxing it can be is also a huge plus. To really amp it up, try using reed diffusers and oil warmers to give off even more nature themed scents such as gardenia or sandalwood.
5. Fire and Stone
Nothing is more natural than stone and fire. Am I right? Try replacing any bookends with large stones. For the fire you are somewhat limited to candles if you aren’t lucky enough to have a fireplace in your bedroom. Dress those candles up by using a stone candle holder, or start with glass and surround it with things like rope, sand, or branches. The possibilities are endless here!
