6 Best Tips for Painting Your Closet

Posted on August 2, 2021

This year has definitely been one for home makeovers. One area of the home that is important but might not get the most attention are the closets. While closets aren’t a main focal point unless it’s a luxurious walk-in. It’s still nice to give them a fresh look from time to time.

  1. Color Combinations

First and foremost, selecting the right color for your size closet is imperative. For smaller closets you’ll want to select a light neutral color. This is so that when you put clothes inside it doesn’t end up looking too dark. If your closet doesn’t have a window or very good lighting, it is best to choose a bright color to lighten up the space. If you want to downplay the closet as more utilitarian storage you could choose a darker color.

  1. Accent Walls

You don’t have to completely paint the entire closet. Maybe you want to just start with a fun accent wall. You could use a bright, bold color or install temporary wallpaper. It’s best to make sure that this wall is exposed so you can see the accent. If you have a favorite color clothing in your closet, choose a complementary color.

  1. Storage Nooks

Since closet are full of storage you can paint these spaces too. Especially shoe storage which can look boring or dull. A fresh coat of paint on your built ins is an easy way to add color and freshen up your closet. You can also use the repainting opportunity as a way to reorganize your closet space.

  1. Paint Finishes

Another thing to consider when painting your entire closet is what type of paint finish to have on top. There are matte, sheen, high gloss finishes. Which one you select can be based on personal preference or closet lighting. The matte finish might be nice for closets that get a ton of light. In addition, a sheen or gloss might be better for darker closet that need more reflective light.

  1. Match Colors to Other Closets

Sometimes consistency is key. By painting your closets all matching colors, you will provide a uniformity throughout your home. This choice might also be cheaper because you won’t be spending money on different colors.
