Preserving History: Ceiling Repaint for Richmond Church
In September 2025, CertaPro Painters® of Hanover/Chesterfield, VA completed a two-day interior project for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia.
Built in 1859, this historic church features soaring ceilings and ornate architectural details. Our crew was brought in to repair and repaint sections of the ceiling that had previously been patched by another company. The prior repairs were visible and poorly color-matched, detracting from the beauty of the sanctuary.
The goal was to restore a seamless, consistent appearance while taking extra precautions to protect the church’s historic features, including paintings, stained glass, and the sanctuary itself. By the project’s end, the ceiling appeared uniform and consistent, eliminating the patchy look left behind by prior repairs and returning the church interior to its original elegance.

Scope of the Work:
The project began with the careful erection of scaffolding to safely reach the church’s ceiling, which rises more than 25 feet above the sanctuary. All surrounding areas—including paintings, stained glass windows, and the pulpit—were meticulously covered to prevent damage or overspray.
Once protected, our crew primed and repainted the previously repaired ceiling areas, using careful color matching to blend the new coatings seamlessly into the existing finishes.
Special Techniques & Equipment:
Because St. Patrick’s is a historic church, the team exercised extreme care throughout the project. Specialized scaffolding was necessary to safely access the ceiling without disturbing fragile architectural and decorative elements. The greatest challenge was ensuring that the new paint matched the existing ceiling color perfectly, so the repairs would disappear into the larger surface.
