How To Pick A Color Palette For Your Whole House

Posted on September 28, 2021

Have you ever had to choose a paint color for a room? It seems easy but it can actually turn into a very stressful process. With so many colors, shades, undertones, and finishes it is easy to become overwhelmed. If you are in the position where you recently moved or your interior just needs a refresh, you are now faced with the task of choosing an entire color palette. So how will you do it? Don’t worry we are here to help! Our team here at CertaPro Painters® of Grand Haven has picked up some tips and tricks when it comes to picking a color palette for your whole house.

Pick the color for the biggest most visible room. This will probably be your living room or kitchen. It is easiest to pick a neutral color for this room because it gives you more freedom with the other rooms.

Pick the color for the room you want to paint a bold color. Rather than starting with the biggest room, you can start with the room you already know you want to paint a bold color. Once you paint that room in a bold hue, the surrounding rooms can be softer colors.

Once you have picked the shade for the first room, move on to the rooms next to it. You can choose the same color for adjacent rooms or walls or go a shade lighter or darker. This will give your house depth while also ensuring everything still goes together.

If your house is an open space, it is especially important that the paint shades flow. You can choose the same color in different shades or choose colors that work well together.

Don’t be afraid to create a different atmosphere between floors. You do not have to make the upstairs of your home the same as the downstairs. As long as there is a clear separation between the floors you have free reign to do something entirely different.

Things to keep in mind:

Which rooms are visible to one another? You will want to write this down, so you don’t forget. Knowing adjoining rooms or rooms/hallways that are just visible from the other is a crucial step when deciding your color palette.
