What to Know Before Painting Your Home Exterior
Posted on February 28, 2022
Painting your home exterior might cause a mess and disruption to your life. Of course, it’s exciting when the project is done, but it’s challenging to get across the finish line. Going into a project like this with knowledge and managed expectations allows everyone to be set for success. Here are a few things to know before painting your home exterior:
Consider the Expense
An exterior paint job is not inexpensive. It directly depends on the size and intricacies of your home’s style. An estimate will include everything required from beginning to end of the painting process. Take stock in the work that will be completed before a painting can is ever opened. If you’re on a strict budget, avoid scope creep by pitching in with some work. Little elements like trimming bushes, repairing cracks and painting trim are all working hours you would be a crew to complete. Removing any of it will help the bottom line.
Preparation is Vital
As we say with any painting project, preparation is vital! No paint job will look good if they do not complete the proper prep work. With exterior work, make sure there are no underlying problems, such as loose pieces, decayed wood, or insect damage. You can determine these with a close inspection. These are all things that must be resolved before moving onto painting. Failure to do so will cause your paint job lasting for a shorter period of time and more costly repairs in the future.
If you get the all-clear on damage, it is time to move onto the next steps. Your house will most likely need a power wash. Intense weather can be hard on siding, and you want to make sure you are working with a pristine surface before applying primer or paint (we always recommend priming the surface!).
Prioritize Safety
Beyond your project, you will want to find a commercial painter that will provide the skills and safety necessary on the job site. OSHA standards need to be adhered to when working in small, high, enclosed or dangerous spaces. Crews need to work with leads and in fall prevention. Painters should follow all rules when it comes to emergency compliance and rules.
A crew that does not adhere to best practices in safety could increase your liability. You’ll want to make sure whomever you hire is both licensed and insured, so you don’t take on the risk yourself. Less scrupulous companies could try to turn around accidents on the owner or manager of the space, playing a blame game. One way to determine your painting company’s plan is to ask about their safety plans and ask about their licensure and insurance.
