A Major Renovation
Sitting on a large farm in Afton, TN, this timeless farmhouse had been in a local family’s possession for generations. The wood siding had been periodically replaced in small quantities, but wood rot had overtaken the home and several sides needed a full replacement of siding along with an overhaul of the front porch framing and railing being rebuilt. It was an old home that only gets used periodically and needed several maintenance items addressed.

Project Involvement:This project involved major carpentry. The front porch floor joists had rotted and the floors were pulling away from the house, sinking several inches near the front of the porch, needing floor boards removed, framing replaced and lifted. The railing system had begun to rot in several areas as well. CertaPro replaced all railings with brand new rails as well. The siding on the right side of the home and the out-buildings were all in disrepair.
CertaPro came in, replaced the siding on the right side of the home and the out-buildings. We ran into several unknowns like rotting framing behind the siding once removed, but were able to provide a solution to the customers and rebuild some framing along with installing a water proofing wall barrier which was not originally installed with this home. All this, with the added complexity of practicing lead-safe EPA guidelines to provide a safe environment for our customers and their families and our employees.
Special Challenges: Due to the age of the home, we ran into framing issues behind the siding being replaced, aged and rotting framing below the porch and had to provide solutions as we replaced in order to secure the areas. We required a large dumpster for the waste.
We implemented flush cutting on the old siding against the soffits, as it was installed behind soffits. Lead-safe equipment such as plastics and hazmat suits were required for the duration of the project. The painting itself required a special Peel-Bond Primer, Prime RX from Sherwin Williams, to lock down raised paint edges to ensure a quality paint application.
