Cabin Staining Project in Maryville, TN
In April of 2021, a homeowner contracted CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee to enhance their large cabin home in Maryville, TN. This cabin, built in 2005, is located at the top of Chilhowee Mountain, looking out upon the Great Smoky Mountains. In the end, the homeowner was extremely satisfied with the completion of their project, and the hard work our amazing crews put in.
The cabin needed maintenance to the siding and railings, as well as an update to the staining that was beginning to deteriorate. The railing system and posts were also starting to deteriorate and needed a vast amount of repair. Instead of replacing numerous balusters, we consulted with the homeowner and ultimately decided it would be best in the long term to completely replace the entire railing system.
After we removed all the railing components, we found many areas of hidden wood rot. We custom ordered several “hand-hewn” posts from a local vendor in Maryville, so we could match the existing profile of the railing posts. We also went with aluminum balusters with a factory finish for long term performance. We found a vendor online to special order the style the customer liked. Along with replacing the entire railing system, we did several other minor repairs throughout the cabin including deck boards, facia boards, trim boards, re-securing loose boards, etc.
Our paint crew spent two days thoroughly washing the house and decks prior to staining. The homeowner had old cans of stain, which was helpful in determining which product line and color to use. We applied two coats Proluxe Log and Siding and Proluxe DEK (formerly known as Sikkens) to all the siding, soffits, trim, railings, decks, and posts. It is always helpful when customers have a record of the products they have used in the past. This can help determine if there are any compatibility issues with the new products being applied. This is especially important with stains.
A week after the home was stained, our carpenters returned to install over 1200 spindles to the railings. Due to the railings not being of standard height, each spindle was cut to length and new holes were drilled to mount them. Forming an assembly line, the carpenters got to work cutting and installing each individual spindle, until the home was almost completely transformed.

Project Duration: 5 Weeks
The project was large and took about three weeks of carpentry along with two weeks of staining to complete. In the end, the homeowner was extremely satisfied with the completion of their project, and the hard work our amazing crews put in.
Challenges
There were some challenges faced, such as gaining access to the cabin, and working around inclement weather conditions. Being that the roads were narrow, curvy, and quite steep; it was important for us to plan out the logistics of this project in advance to maintain our efficiency while on the job site. This included supplying a dumpster on site for waste, and using smaller vehicles for traveling and navigating the narrow roads.
