Painting the Knoxville Sunsphere
The Sunsphere located in World’s Fair Park in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, is a 266-foot high hexagonal steel truss structure, topped with a 75 ft gold-colored glass sphere that served as the symbol of the 1982 World’s Fair.
Before painting the 40-year-old Sunsphere back to its original blue color, the Sunsphere was green. You could see where years of rain, snow, and other weather conditions have caused the paint to peel and lift exposing the bare metal to all elements and allowing some rust to start.
The Sunsphere is a 26-story hexagon structure standing at 266 feet! Due to the unique challenge of the pure size and proximity to the river within World’s Fair Park, this project required Swing Stage Scaffolding, an 80′ Articulating lift, and a Bosun’s Chair.
We broke the project into multiple phases due to the scaffolding and Bosun’s Chair needing to be moved after every section of the hexagon was completed.
For more than 40 years, the Sunsphere has brought joy and inspiration to our community.

Rolling on New Paint
For parts of the tower like this fencing section, we used rollers to apply the blue paint.
Spray Equipment Used
We utilized paint sprayers while working our way up each segment using a variety of tools and equipment.
Restoring the Original Blue Color
The color change was dramatic and clearly visible from all parts of Knoxville.
