Of course, every cabinet restoration project will be a bit different. But the following steps should give you a clear picture of what our typical process is for restoring cabinets, whether they be in the kitchen, bathroom, or any other room.
Doors & Hardware Are Removed
We carefully remove doors and hardware from all cabinets. You will have an opportunity to update hardware on a project like this to match the new look.
Surfaces are Sanded & Prepped
Surfaces are sanded, some parts by hand and others with power equipment to prep the surface for a new paint or stain application.
Paint / Stain is Applied to Doors
The project will vary here depending on if you want a stained finish or a painted one. Painting often includes primer steps to help keep the finish durable.
Paint / Stain Applied to Mounted Cabinets
We then work our way around the hung cabinets, while still on the wall. This is usually done with hand rollers or brushes.
Reassemble Cabinets
After the paint or stain has had time to dry and cure, the cabinets and hardware are put back together for a beautiful final product with a brand new look.

The following are frequently asked questions we receive from customers undertaking cabinet restoration projects with our team.
Do you paint the cabinets on-site at my residence?
CertaPro can accommodate on-site cabinet painting upon request. This would necessitate the establishment of a spray station in a vacant garage, provided the temperature conditions are suitable for painting. Typically, we transport cabinet doors and drawer fronts to our warehouse for preparation and spray application. The actual cabinet frames are prepped and painted in your kitchen.
What is the usual timeline to complete a cabinet painting project?
The duration of a project depends significantly on the number of cabinets and the size of the project. On average, a project takes approximately 5-7 business days. This includes the time needed to prepare the cabinets for the primer coat, the application of the finish coats, and the necessary drying time between each coat.
Is it possible to use my kitchen immediately after the painting is completed?
While light use of cabinets is possible within a day or two of completion, we recommend a wait period of two to three weeks for the top coat to fully cure before heavy use and cleaning.
Do I need to be present while the crew is painting?
Our crew splits their workday between on-site painting and work at our warehouse. The team will communicate their schedule daily so you can plan accordingly. Once on-site work is complete, we will no longer require access to the interior of your home. If you are comfortable providing us with a key for access, our Job Site Supervisor will secure your home after finishing, and our Service Manager will periodically visit your home throughout the project to ensure cleanliness and quality control.
What kind of paint does CertaPro use, and why?
Our preferred choice for cabinet projects is oil-based primers and water-based urethane enamel top-coats. Despite requiring longer cure times, these products assure longevity and durability. Latex paints, conversely, can peel due to exposure to water and heat, get worn from hand oils, and generally require more maintenance. The oil and urethane enamel products we use provide a stronger cure, a better finish, and greater durability. Our choice is Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, in satin, semi-gloss, or gloss finish according to your preference. A higher sheen typically offers increased washability for cleaning.
What preparation is required before the painters arrive?
Your preparation is minimal, requiring only the emptying out of cabinets and drawers of items such as glasses, pots and pans, etc. We do not paint the interiors of the cabinets or drawers unless specially requested, which would entail additional costs.
How should I choose the right color?
We recommend visiting a Sherwin Williams paint store to explore color options. Once you have a shortlist of options, you can pick up a few paint samples to apply to the cabinets prior to the project starting. This can give you a clear idea of how the shade looks on the actual surface under different lighting conditions. We request that color choices be submitted to our office before the project commences to facilitate preparation.
