A gallon of paint and some elbow grease could net you a pretty penny on the sale of your home. Particular colors have wide appeal and are recommended when staging your house for sale. Realtors suggest neutrals inside and out. Zillow and Realtor.com have done research to determine the best colors for increasing your sale offer prices. Here is the paint color that can sell your house for $6,000 more.

Who knew a bucket of paint could be worth so much money?

Listing your home for sale normally comes with a to-do list of small improvements and do it yourself projects to help attract buyers. If you’re about to list your home, now is the time to consider a few painting projects, starting with your front door.

exterior of house Exteriors – For your exterior, avoid creamy, bright yellow or it could cost you $3,408. Exterior paint jobs are rather costly and can run more than $6,000 depending on size and how complicated the job is. Making decisions based solely on potential income isn’t the best way to approach such a big project. After hearing the recommendations of your realtor, weigh each option carefully. Make sure the potential income is higher than the costs to have the project done.

Front Doors – After looking at 135,000 photos, Zillow found that country wide homes with black doors sold for $6,271 more than expected. These colors included charcoal, smoky or jet black. To get a door painted, it’s approximately $100 to $400 and a bucket of black paint.

kitchenInterior Areas – When it comes to the rest of the interior of the house, neutral walls are a big hit overall, especially when working in great rooms. Bathrooms are best when painted in light blues and taupe is a winner in the living room. Avoid using dark red or dark brown walls or it could sell for $2,310 less. A fresh coat of paint over those colors is worth the price at the closing table.

Kitchens-  In addition to a black door, doing your kitchen in a tuxedo inspired look also adds to the bottom line. Tuxedo kitchens are those with the upper cabinets and lower cabinets done in two different colors. Try pairing a lighter color with darker on the bottom. It adds depth and dimension to an otherwise bland kitchen without adding a color that could turn off some buyers.
