Timeless Trend: Tray Ceilings
Posted on January 17, 2019
Tray ceilings – also referred to as inverted or recessed ceilings – resemble a large upside-down tray that has been set into a ceiling. Extremely versatile, tray ceilings can create a dramatic and interesting focal point in any room. If your home features tray ceilings, you may be wondering how you can best take advantage of them. Here are some ideas:
Change the color. This will make the biggest impression on the space, allowing the trays to stand out from the rest of the room. If your room features a neutral palette, use a contrasting color on your tray ceilings. Lighter hues, like sky blue or sage, are perfect for kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Use richer, bolder shades to create a more dramatic contrast in gathering spaces like dining rooms, entryways, and living rooms.
Use the wall color. This doesn’t include the vertical sides of the tray ceiling – just the horizontally flat parts. Doing so will add depth and texture to the space, a look that works perfectly in dining rooms, home offices, or libraries.
Go darker. Contrary to popular belief, you can use a darker shade on your tray ceiling. If you’re considering this option, consider the height of the walls (you won’t want to use a dark color if your ceilings are low) and the natural light that comes into the space (dark ceilings can draw the eye downward and create the appearance of a dim space). Certain rooms call for darker ceilings, like media rooms, because it will make the room feel cozier.
Accentuate the tray. Instead of adding color to the horizontal portions of your tray ceiling, add crown molding and paint that and the side walls. You can also stain the crown molding (depending on the type you choose) to add even more texture to bedrooms, dining rooms, and living spaces.
Paint the entire ceiling (tray and all). If your tray covers the entirety of the ceiling, consider painting the entire ceiling one color. To accentuate the angles and create a pleasing focal point, leave crisp white moldings. Use a different color on the rest of the walls in the room to generate visual interest.
Spruce up your tray ceilings with these alternative ideas! Before you choose a design, remember to consider the room your tray ceilings are in, the lighting in that space, and the amount of attention you want drawn to your ceiling.
