Tips for Painting Your Home in Spring
Posted on February 29, 2020
Now that we are heading outside after the cold winter, your house might be looking a bit worse for wear. With warmer days and less precipitation, this is the perfect time of year to get started with an exterior painting project. If you’re a do it yourself-er, here are some tips for painting your home in spring from the experts at CertaPro Painters® of Central Miami.

Pressure Wash
The cleaner the exterior of your home is, the better your new paint will adhere. Rent or buy a pressure washer to remove mold, algae, dirt and loose paint that has built up over winter. There are companies that will provide the cleaning, or work on it with a rented machine. Be careful not to use too much pressure, since some wood and siding can be damaged. Avoid soap and cleaners since they can leave behind a film that prevents the paint from sticking.
Sand Before Painting
After the house dries from washing, take time to lightly sand the entire surface to even and smooth. This will also provide a good tooth for the new paint to adhere to. Use a blower to blow dust and debris from the area, since any leftovers can turn into bumps and clumps as you paint.
Choose Colors Wisely
When you are choosing a color for the exterior of your home, it’s important to do your research. Check with any governing bodies for rules and regulations on the colors you may choose. Pick a color that will wear well for your area. Avoid out of the norm colors, and those that are too bright. They won’t stand up to the sunlight beating down on them. Going with classics is always a good idea. Think blues, yellows, grays, and whites. Pick a complementary trim color. If you are looking for a pop of color, consider a statement door.
Use Paint Samples First
Before you start painting the entire exterior of your home, test the color. Use a sprayer to see how it looks. It’s a good idea to test 5 options before you pick your favorite. Ensure you have chosen a complementary color for the trim. Test the two next to each other and be sure to observe them at different times of the day. The sunlight will make a difference in the look of the color.
Consider Using a Paint Sealant
Paint sealants are not always included in your paint mix. If it’s not, you might want to consider doing a separate sealant layer. This keeps your paint in good condition for a longer period of time. That means less fading and chipping and more time between painting.
Stain Decks and Patios
While you’re painting the exterior of your home, finish the look by taking on any wooden elements outside your house. Sealing or painting decks, arbors, porches or any wood structures can make your house look it’s best and protect the wood from water intrusion. This means a deck sealant can help your deck last longer before you have to replace it.
