How to Add Color into your Home

Posted on January 20, 2022

Our team at CertaPro Painters® of Cedarhill-Seagoville talks to a lot of homeowners that want to add new paint colors into their home but don’t know where to start. A lot of people will opt for whites, creams and tans because it is the safe choice. It looks nice and it is easy to match with any other colors you decide to add into the space. However, using different paint colors can really set a home apart and is a great chance to show off your creativity. Rather than avoid color all together, follow these tips!

  1. Use different shades of the same color. If you want to keep your home somewhat cohesive then this is great option. Pick out the a light shade, a medium and a darker shade. Depending on your space, you can get really creative with where you use each shade. We would recommend using the light shade on the walls, the medium shade on the trim and the darker shade on any molding or wainscoting.
  2. Start with your kitchen. The kitchen is a great room to start with when it comes to adding more color into the home. Two-toned cabinets are quickly becoming a huge trend and we love the way this looks. You can pick to similar colors or two different colors and use one on the bottom cabinets and one on the top.
  3. If you prefer a classic look, choose a blue paint color. A white and blue color scheme can be made more elegant or more casual. If you want to add color into your home, but in a subtle way, this is a good color scheme choice.
  4. Research coordinating colors. Colors that are opposite of each other on the color will look best together. An example of this would be purple and orange. It is hard to picture these two colors meshing but trust the process.
  5. Once you pick the color scheme, repeat it throughout the home. Once you pick your paint colors, take into consideration which rooms are next to each other, which rooms you can see from other rooms, hallway placement, and openness of the house. These factors will all have an influence on which color you should paint each room. For example, if you can see your kitchen from your living room, it is important these colors flow together nicely.
  6. Don’t be scared to add a lot of different colors into one space. Some of the best home design consists of a lot of bright colors and patterns in a space. You don’t need to limit yourself to a single shade.
  7. Pick pattern or color. In some cases, patterns and bright colors can work well together but it is hard to accomplish. We would recommend picking one or the other to avoid over stimulation in the room.
  8. Use décor instead. If paint is too much of a commitment for you, we totally understand. You can always opt for bold and bright décor pieces like pillows, rugs, couches, and tables.
