How to Prep Your Home for Spring Painting

Posted on March 20, 2022

Spring might have you ready to pop outside for an afternoon of warm weather fun. Upon first inspection, your house might be in need of a home makeover. Fortunately, painting in the spring has plenty of benefits that ultimately make it the best time to paint your house. Well, whether you are painting the interior or exterior of your property, there are multiple steps that need to be taken before your paint can is even popped open. Exterior paint jobs are really complicated and take quite a bit of coordination to get a great result. But what are these steps, exactly? How does one prepare for a spring painting service? Our professionals are here to help.

Make Necessary Repairs

There is little use to painting a home that is riddled with issues. These issues will cause the paint you are applying to peel, chip, and fade faster than they would normally and you’ll be back in the same position that you are now. Get rid of any damaged or rotten panels and scrape away any already-flaking paint before you get too far into the process. If you are still planning on going the DIY route for your painting, you may want to hire a professional to take care of the repairs for you.

Wash it Down

The most important step to any paint job is to wash the surface you plan to paint. For interiors, this can typically be done with a warm washcloth. Be careful of combining cleaning additives to the mix; you may cause damage to the paint underneath or cause adherence issues with the new paint. Most importantly, though, remember to wait for your surface to dry completely before moving onto your painting process. This typically takes about 24 hours.

Exterior paint jobs are an entirely different beast, though. You’ll likely need to rent or purchase a power washer to thoroughly clean the exterior of your home. Make sure that you are comfortable operating a power washer and do a few test runs before applying to the surface of your home.

Cover Surrounding

Once things are clean and repaired, you’ll want to make sure to cover any areas that you do not want paint on. Paint can be messy, especially when you’re applying to large surfaces such as the exterior of your home. Be sure to cover any electrical outlets, plants, and air conditioners. You’ll want to lock these covers down with tape, too. If you’re painting your home interior, don’t forget about the ceiling! Light fixtures and fans should be properly covered or put away before the painting process begins.
