Hospital Landing Pad Project in Broomfield, CO

In October 2020, CertaPro Painters of Castle Rock, CO, was entrusted with an essential project for one of the largest hospitals in Colorado: restoring their helicopter landing pad. Years of exposure to the elements had left the surface faded, peeling, and deteriorating, making the helipad not only visually unappealing but also unsafe. Here’s a detailed look at how we tackled this critical project.

Initial Condition of the Helipad

The helipad’s surface was in poor shape. The paint had severely faded, and sections of the concrete and paint were crumbling, creating potential hazards for hospital staff. Additionally, the peeling substrate made the helipad difficult to spot from the air, a significant safety concern for pilots flying in emergency situations. It was clear that the surface required a complete restoration to bring it back to proper safety and operational standards.

The Project Scope

Surface Preparation
The first task was to remove the old, damaged paint. We used a diamond grinder to strip the substrate down to a clean surface. This process ensured that the new coatings would adhere properly, increasing the durability of the finish.

Debris Removal
After grinding, we swept up debris and used a shop vacuum to ensure a clean workspace. This step was crucial to prevent any particles from interfering with the application of new materials.

Masking and Stenciling
The helipad required precision masking to match the existing design, which included the large “H” and circular markings recognizable to pilots. We carefully taped and masked off these areas to create clean, professional lines.

Painting and Finishing
With the surface prepped and masked, we applied a durable coating to restore the bright, highly visible colors of the helipad. This coating not only refreshed the appearance but also enhanced its functionality by providing a safer, more visible landing area.

In just three days, the helipad was transformed. The fresh, vibrant colors made it easier for pilots to locate the pad from the air, which is critical in emergency scenarios. The restored surface also eliminated the risk of tripping hazards for hospital personnel moving equipment and patients in and out of helicopters.

This project wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about safety and functionality. The hospital now has a helipad that meets their operational needs and reflects their commitment to excellence in patient care.

Diamond Grinder in Action

Watch the video below to see our team using a diamond grinder during the prep phase of this helipad restoration project. The diamond grinder is a critical tool in projects like this, as it removes old, peeling paint and levels uneven concrete surfaces. By stripping away deteriorated coatings and opening the surface pores, the grinder ensures that the new paint adheres properly and lasts longer.

This step not only enhances the durability of the finished surface but also addresses safety concerns by creating a smooth, even base. Alongside other tools like shop vacuums and power washers, the diamond grinder played a key role in preparing the helipad for a fresh, professional finish.

Project Photos

Repainting a helicopter landing pad requires precision and efficiency, and this project was a great example of both. Over the course of three days, the surface was prepped, primed, and painted to ensure durability and clear visibility for pilots. The job was completed smoothly without delays, resulting in a crisp, professional finish that will withstand the elements and heavy use. From start to finish, this project demonstrated how effective planning and execution can deliver outstanding results in a short timeframe.
