Protect Your Property for Hurricane Season with Paint

Hurricane season is gearing up again and that means potential storms hitting our coasts. Whether you have commercial or residential property, now is the time to enact your hurricane preparation plan and our team is happy to help.

According to the National Flood Insurance Program, the average hurricane-related home flood claim was over $39,000. Most of this damage comes from wind and water. There are steps you can take now to save yourself money later.

Windows

Ensuring your windows are properly sealed seems like a small step when it comes to hurricanes. Weather stripping quickly becomes brittle and can crack and fall away, leaving your home open to moisture intrusion and subsequent damage. Heat and humidity contribute to the quick deterioration. Because of this, an annual inspection of all of your windows and doors is in your best interest. The weather stripping will look like it is dry and pulling away from the walls. A repair is simple with new caulking and if necessary, paint to cover the repair.

Holes

Any holes in your home can allow water to get inside the walls and cause damage. Be sure seals are in tact around areas like  wiring, pipes, soffits, windows and more. Again, caulking these areas before hurricanes hit can allow for better protection.

Substrate and Paint

While you are inspecting the exterior of your property, look at your stucco or substrate for cracking or other signs of deterioration. Even if your property is in good standing as far as damage, the paint can need work. Paint is the first layer of defense for your home against the wind, debris and driving rain that hurricanes bring with them.
