Flooring Upgrade for the Frontier Academy in Greeley

In December 2025, CertaPro Painters® of Boulder and Longmont completed a specialized epoxy flooring restoration project for Frontier Academy, a charter school in Greeley, Colorado. The auditorium floor’s existing epoxy coating had begun to fail, with large blisters, peeling sections, and detachment from the concrete substrate creating both safety concerns and long-term usability issues. Our team was brought in to fully remove the failing system and install a new, high-performance epoxy coating designed to withstand heavy institutional traffic.

This project was carefully scheduled during the school’s winter break, allowing the auditorium to be fully restored and operational before students and staff returned. With a tight nine-day window, detailed planning, proper cure times, and efficient coordination were critical to delivering a durable, professional finish on schedule.

PROJECT SCOPE

The scope of work included complete removal of the failed epoxy coating down to bare concrete using diamond grinding equipment. To maintain indoor air quality in the school environment, grinding was performed with HEPA vacuum dust containment to control concrete debris throughout the process. Once the substrate was exposed, our crew completed necessary concrete repairs by filling pits and holes with patching products compatible with the epoxy system, ensuring a smooth and stable surface for coating application.

After surface profiling and preparation, a robust multi-coat epoxy flooring system was installed. The floor received a full base coat applied at a minimum thickness of 30 mils, followed by an overnight cure period before the application of a clear protective top coat. The final system delivered complete coverage across the auditorium floor, including areas behind retractable roll-out seating towers.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:

Because the project took place inside an active school facility, protection and containment were essential. Surrounding carpet areas were sealed off with triple-thick plastic barriers, and ventilation and fume management protocols were implemented throughout the enclosed auditorium space. Daily cleanup and jobsite organization ensured the building remained safe and controlled during the restoration.

Schedule management was another key challenge. With only a nine-day winter break available, our team coordinated grinding, repairs, coating installation, and overnight cure times with precision. We also worked closely with school staff to ensure seating towers were moved in advance so the entire floor, including difficult access areas, could be restored without interruption.

The team maintained a dust-free environment throughout the application process to avoid contamination of moving parts. Careful navigation around sensitive components and adherence to strict safety and cleanliness protocols ensured the equipment remained fully operational during and after the project.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT & TECHNIQUES:

This project required specialized flooring preparation and coating techniques, including diamond grinding with HEPA dust containment to remove all failed material and properly profile the concrete. The epoxy application process involved careful thickness control, overnight curing between coats, and the installation of a clear top coat for long-term durability. These methods ensured the finished floor could handle high-traffic institutional use while remaining easy to maintain and resistant to wear.
