How Often Should I Paint Inside My House

Posted on August 2, 2019

Painting inside your house can yield fun and exciting results. But very few people look forward to the chaos and mess a paint job can cause. Most homeowners will not volunteer to paint for fun. It must be an absolute requirement to handle. Avoiding it can cause issues with the paint and walls. This might have you asking how often should I paint inside my house?

The answer is there is no standard answer. Depending on the room and the amount of usage the paint might last longer or deteriorate more rapidly. Our professionals have given us this basic guideline to go by.

Formal Living and Dining Rooms

Because these rooms are rarely used, they are rarely in need of painting. More than likely, you’ll want to paint for aesthetic reasons rather than necessity. You’ll be able to wait 5-7 years to paint your formal living and dining rooms.

Master Bedrooms

When you are dealing with bedrooms, there will be the occasional bumps and bruises on the walls. Master bedrooms will suffer much less than a child or teen’s room. For the typical master bedroom, you’ll be able to paint every 5 years or so.

Children’s Bedrooms

Children spend a lot more of their time in their rooms, bringing messes with them. Between crayons on the walls and messy spills, painting can seem necessary every other month. Try using a glossy finish paint to allow for easier cleaning and extend the life of the walls. With this, you should expect to paint the room every 3-4 years.

Kitchen

More messes occur in the kitchen than other rooms of the house. With food and a lot of traffic, it’s only natural this room needs a bit more attention that others. Even with a more durable and cleanable finish paint, you’ll still need to paint the kitchen every 3 years, more if you are vigilant with being clean.

Bathrooms

Moisture always causes issues with the paint on the walls. Because the bathroom is notorious for water spills, humidity and rouge shaving cream, the walls take a beating. This means you’ll need to address the wall paint every 4 years. It’s important to remember that the paint is the first defense against the water in the room. If it is showing signs of wear, water could be getting into the walls.
