History of Dulin United Methodist Church
Dulin United Methodist Church has a very long history in the City of Falls Church. It was the second church built in the village of Falls Church. The first sanctuary was built on 513 E Broad Street in 1869. The building has undergone 3 major additions since 1869. The present day ministry of Dulin has centered its focus on education, worship, outreach and evangelism.
The exterior facade of the church and day care center were painted less than 10 years ago. However, the paint started to fail – flaking, chipping – in less than 1 year after painting. CertaPro Painters® of Arlington were hired to address the flaking paint and provide a clean exterior paint job.
Church Transformation
CHALLENGES:
As we approached the scene, there were approximately 20,000 square footage of stucco/EIFS with flaking paint and/or chalking paint issues to address. The paint on the original and older parts of the building had stucco that was chipping and flaking off, leaving large and small gaps where dirt had embedded itself. Overall, the building looked dirty and in need of an exterior paint job.
PROJECT INVOLVEMENT:
CertaPro Painters® of Arlington preparation included patching all the damaged ceiling areas, taping joint cracks, scuff sanding the ceiling surfaces, and applying a full coat of primer. The ceilings were coated with two applications of ceiling paint. Our surface preparation included scraping the loose paint, full primer application with Loxon conditioner to lock in the chalking and any smaller paint flakes and two coats of premium exterior grade paint with self-cleaning technology, Emerald Rain Refresh.
Scrapping off the loose paint provided a challenge since the building surface wasn’t flat. CertaPro Painters® had to scrape with rake like scrapers to work around the rough texturing of the stucco material. Power washing was not a possibility, as the building sat right over the city’s storm drains.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT:
This project was completed with a combination of ladder work and lift work for expediency.
