Church Interior Painting Project
St. John's Lutheran Church
Ready to make a change?
History of St. John’s Lutheran Church
On August 29, 1955, eight families of the Springfield-Franconia area in Virginia petitioned the Mission Board of the Southeastern District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to initiate a program to make possible the establishment of a church in the Springfield area. The current sanctuary was built in 1966.
Over the years, the roof has been repaired and replaced leaving large traces of water damage and ceiling cracks from normal building movement. The trustees and the pastor began their search for reliable and professional contractors to address the repairs and painting of their sanctuary ceilings.
The St. John’s sanctuary painting project had several logistical challenges that our production team had to work around. First, the sanctuary floors were asbestos tiles that were old and some were cracked. We had to protect the tiles from further damages when removing the pews. Second, the ceiling at its highest peak was 30 feet tall. The production team worked with Sunbelt rentals to find a lift that can reach the ceilings and yet distribute its weight. A 60 foot atrium manlift was selected to help us do the job properly. We spent a great many hours moving pews and covering the floors with plastic sheeting and plywood boards to protect the floors.
There were several areas in the sanctuary ceiling where the plaster and paint had crumbled from roof leaks over the years. The leaks dried and left stains on the ceiling. Cracks along the ceiling joints were visible.
CertaPro Painters of Arlington preparation included patching all of the damaged ceiling areas and taping joint cracks, scuff sanding the ceiling surfaces and applying a full coat of primer. The ceilings were coated with two applications of ceiling paint.
Project Timeline – Approximately 11 days
Before the project began, CertaPro Painters® of Arlington, VA surveyed the building and took pictures of the areas of concern. Much of the interior was in need of repainting.
