Commercial Exterior Painting In Winnipeg

CHALLENGES:
Our team was tasked with the intricate job of painting the upper cornice and decorative trim of the historic J.R. Watkins Company Building at 90 Annabella, Winnipeg. Key challenges included handling deteriorating lead paint and rust on metal surfaces while complying with environmental safety protocols. The building’s height and its proximity to obstacles like train tracks and green spaces added complexity to access. Additionally, logistical issues involved managing overspray in a nearby parking lot and coordinating street closures with city authorities. The project also faced a tight timeline, requiring the crew to work long hours to complete the work before the onset of adverse weather.

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT
The project began with the safe removal and disposal of old lead paint. The bare metal was then treated with an epoxy-based primer, and rusted areas were reinforced with Kem Bond. All holes and imperfections were repaired to ensure a smooth surface for the final application of two coats of polyurethane, which were applied using an industrial sprayer to ensure durability and a high-quality finish.

Access to hard-to-reach areas was achieved using a mobile crane, which allowed the team to navigate over and around the building effectively. An angle grinder was employed to prepare metal surfaces meticulously before painting.

PROJECT TIMELINE
The project was conducted over a three-week period in September 2024. The crew’s dedication to long working days was crucial in meeting the deadline before the change in weather, ensuring the project did not experience any delays.

THE FINAL RESULTS
The restoration work on the J.R. Watkins Company Building has significantly enhanced its architectural details while preserving its historic integrity.
