Make your deck look new again with deck staining services
It’s been a long winter of snow and ice, and it can wreak havoc on the wood of your deck. Now that the area has thawed out, it’s time to see what damage was done before you get out on your deck for the summer. Here is how to clean and inspect your deck after a long winter, and other deck staining service options to consider.
Regular maintenance and addressing issues immediately will help your deck last for years to come. The worst thing you can do is put off repairs or maintenance. It could end up costing you multiple times over in the long run.
Debris
It’s always a good idea to remove leaves, twigs and other debris that build up on your decking. The wood can suffer from moisture being held in from those leaves. The wet spots can turn your wood black, or worse, cause mold and rot. Ideally, using a leaf blower or broom to keep the debris to a minimum.
Grills
The deck is a convenient place to put grills. Always make sure you are using a grease trap to protect the decking immediately under the grill. A greasy build up could cause extensive damage that will need repairing.
Surrounding Flora
Having low-hanging branches or shrubbery against your wooden deck can create bridges for bugs to get onto the deck. They will also hold moisture from dew and rain against the wood. Potted plants do the same damage. The first sign of damage is black marks or rings where the wood was touching. Once those marks appear, it can be difficult or impossible to remove them.
Replacement
Even with proper maintenance, wooden decks will need to be pressure washed and sealed or stained every few years. These jobs are more intense but can be successfully executed by homeowners.
Staining Tips
You must stain bare wood. Putting new stain over the last will create a mess and provide no protection for your decking. Use a wood cleaner to remove finishes from prior staining. Pressure wash to start with a clean surface. The bare wood will also hold your stain longer and create a protective barrier against the elements.
Use an oil-based stain to protect your deck. Oil-based stains will sink deeper into the wood and protect from the inside. Painting only protects the outside of the wood. Once cracks or chips develop, you are no longer protecting your deck.
