WHAT TYPES OF PREPARATION NEED TO BE DONE TO MY HOUSE?
For interior paint work, please assist by:
– Removing small and fragile objects.
– Taking down paintings, pictures, and wall decorations.
– Removing blinds and window coverings.
– Ensuring painted areas are free from dirt and dust.
– Clearing movable furniture for safety; we’ll handle larger items. A charge of $70 per person per
hour may apply for any time exceeding 15 minutes if smaller items are not moved.

For exterior paint work, ensure:
– Access to an outside water connection (if power washing).
– If you have well water please confirm that your well can provide enough water pressure
for cleaning.
– Accessibility to all painting surfaces.
– Trimming bushes or trees that could lean against the house.
– Removing decorative items not being painted.
– Clearing furniture from porches or decks.
– Parking cars away from the painting area.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PRIMER AND WHEN IT IS NEEDED?
Primer serves as a preparatory coat before applying the final paint, promoting better adhesion,
durability, and a uniform finish. It is crucial in the following scenarios:

1) Bare Surfaces: When painting over bare wood, metal, or drywall, primer creates a foundation
for paint adherence.
2) Stain Blocking: To prevent stains from bleeding through the paint, especially when dealing with
water, smoke, or tannin stains.
3) Uneven Surfaces: Primer helps smooth out irregularities, providing a consistent surface for paint
application.
4) Color Changes: When transitioning between dark and light colors or using specialty finishes,
primer enhances color accuracy and coverage.
5) Increased Paint Lifespan: Applying primer can extend the life of the paint job by offering a
protective barrier against moisture and other environmental factors.

HOW MANY COATS OF PAINT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR MY PROJECT?
The number of coats needed for your project depends on several factors, including the surface type,
color changes, and the condition of the existing finish. Generally, we recommend:

1) Primer: Start with a primer to enhance adhesion and create a uniform base.
2) Base Coats: For most projects, two coats of paint are standard to achieve optimal color richness
and durability.
3) Color and Surface Considerations: Dark or vibrant colors may require additional coats for full
coverage. Additionally, surfaces with uneven textures may benefit from an extra coat for a
smoother finish.

Our team assesses each project individually to determine the ideal number of coats, ensuring a high-
quality and long-lasting paint job.

WHAT IS ELASTOMERIC PAINT?
Elastomeric paint is formulated for stucco and masonry facing water intrusion or multiple hairline
cracks. It may need a unique primer and two finish coats, forming a resilient layer. This highly elastic
coating effectively spans cracks, but its application cost is higher than latex paint due to a lower spread
rate and increased complexity.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE THE NEW PAINT TO DRY?
Latex paints typically dry within 30-120 minutes, but it may require up to 30 days for complete curing.
It’s advised to regularly open and close freshly painted windows and doors during this period to prevent
sticking. Additionally, adjusting sprinkler heads away from the newly coated surfaces is recommended.

HOW LONG SHOULD THE NEW PAINT JOB LAST?
The longevity of your new paint job depends on various factors such as weather conditions, surface
preparation, and quality of materials used. Generally, a well-executed interior paint job can last around
5-10 years, while exterior paint can last 7-10 years. Regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and using
high-quality paint contribute to prolonging the life of your paint job. Our team strives to provide durable
and lasting results, ensuring your investment stands the test of time.

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO INCREASE THE LONGEVITY OF MY NEW PAINT
JOB?
To enhance the longevity of your new paint job, consider the following tips:

1) Regular Cleaning: Gently clean painted surfaces to remove dirt and prevent buildup.
2) Address Issues Promptly: Attend to any damage or issues promptly to prevent them
from worsening over time.
3) Quality Materials: Opt for high-quality paints and coatings to ensure durability.
4) Proper Preparation: Ensure surfaces are fully prepared before painting to promote
adhesion and long-lasting results.
5) Protective Coatings: Consider applying a protective topcoat or sealant for added
resistance to wear and tear.
6) Routine Inspections: Periodically inspect painted areas for any signs of damage or
wear, allowing for timely maintenance.

Following these guidelines will contribute to the longevity and vibrancy of your paint job,
maintaining its appeal for years to come.

WILL I SAVE MONEY IF I BUY THE MATERIALS?
It’s unlikely. In reality, we secure more favorable discounts than many major paint
manufacturer’s; employees. Allow us to procure the top-quality materials at the most affordable
rates for you. If you have a predetermined budget, we’re open to discussing paint or stain
options that align with your specific needs. We believe in tailoring our recommendations to each
unique project rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all approach, ensuring the best outcome for
your specific scenario.

If you choose us to procure the materials, you’re likely to save money. Our established
relationships often secure better discounts than those available to the general public. We aim to
provide you with high-quality materials at cost-effective prices, ensuring a budget-friendly
solution for your painting project.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAND-BRUSHED AND SPRAYED PAINT?
Absolutely. The choice between hand-brushed and sprayed paint depends on your project's
specific needs. Hand-brushed applications offer meticulous attention to detail, ideal for intricate
surfaces and smaller areas. On the other hand, spray painting provides a smooth, even finish,
making it well-suited for larger surfaces and a quicker application. We assess each project
individually to recommend the most suitable technique, ensuring optimal results tailored to your
preferences and requirements.

WHAT DOES VOC MEAN?
VOC stands for “organic compound”; encompassing substances like paint thinner,
mineral spirits, alcohol, gasoline, ethylene glycol, acetone, and xylol. These compounds pose
risks to both human health and the environment. While many architectural paints include some
VOCs, the EPA is regulating their levels to mitigate their impact. As VOCs evaporate during
paint drying, they can contribute to the formation of low-level smog, prompting efforts to limit
their presence for environmental and health considerations.

HOW IS INTERIOR ACCESS TO MY HOME HANDLED?
Our painters generally arrive between 8:30-9:00 am, and we kindly request someone to be
present for the initial greeting. For projects extending beyond a single day, your presence is not
required after the first day if you’re comfortable with it. Clear communication is key – please
inform us how the painters should access the interior if you prefer them to let themselves in. We
aim to ensure a smooth and convenient process for accessing your home during the painting
project.

IS THERE LEAD PAINT ON MY HOUSE, AND IF SO, HOW IS IT HANDLED?
As an EPA RRP Certified Renovator, we focus on addressing lead paint concerns by cleaning
up loose, peeling, and cracked paint that poses a risk for lead dust exposure. Our process
involves sealing surfaces with a robust layer of new paint. Before undertaking actions that may
disturb existing coatings, such as power washing or sanding, the EPA mandates testing for lead
in homes built before 1978. If your home falls into this category, it’s advisable to enlist an EPA-
certified inspector for lead testing. In the presence of lead, hiring an EPA-certified lead
renovator is crucial to ensuring the safety and compliance of your painting project. Our
comprehensive approach prioritizes your safety and follows stringent protocols for handling lead
paint, including containment measures and proper disposal.

I’M NOT SURE WHAT COLORS I WANT TO USE. WHAT HELP CAN CERTAPRO
PAINTERS GIVE ME?
CertaPro Painters is here to assist you in choosing the perfect colors for your project. We
provide a complimentary virtual color consultation through Sherwin Williams, and our office will
send you instructions to sign up for this service. Additionally, we suggest visiting your local
Sherwin Williams store to bring home paint samples, allowing you to visualize how the colors
will complement your home. Our goal is to make the color selection process seamless and
enjoyable for you.

WHAT IF I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE COLORS ONCE THEY ARE APPLIED TO THE

BUILDING?
Your satisfaction with the chosen colors is paramount to us. If we haven’t purchased the paint
yet, you’re free to choose another color without any issues. However, once tinted paint has
been purchased, it becomes non-returnable. In such cases, we’ll have to charge you for the new
paint. We strive to ensure your complete happiness with the color selection process and
appreciate your understanding in these situations.

ARE THERE EXTRA CHARGES IF I HAVE MORE COLORS ON MY HOUSE?
Our base price includes one color per room. While we happily accommodate accent walls, if you
decide to add an accent wall after the initial estimate, an additional charge of $80 per accent
wall applies. This covers the extra paint and labor associated with incorporating additional
colors into your project. We strive to provide transparent pricing and ensure your satisfaction
with the final result.

WILL CERTAPRO PAINTERS LEAVE ME WITH TOUCHUP PAINT?
Absolutely, after completing your project, CertaPro Painters will leave any remaining tinted paint
for you. This ensures you have touchup paint readily available for future needs, allowing you to
maintain the beauty of your painted surfaces.

DO CERTAPRO PAINTERS CARRY WORKER’S COMPENSATION AND GENERAL
LIABILITY INSURANCE POLICIES?
Yes, CertaPro Painters carry both worker’s compensation and general liability insurance
policies. We prioritize the safety of our team and your property, ensuring that we are adequately
insured to handle any unforeseen circumstances.

HOW IS PAYMENT HANDLED?
To secure your slot on our schedule, we require a deposit, which can be provided by check
during your estimate appointment or paid online. If you choose to pay online, we’ll email you the
invoice along with instructions. Please be aware that there is a 3% fee for credit card payments,
but no fee for e-check payments.

Your final payment is due upon project completion. We’ll email your final invoice either the day
before or on your final project day. You can settle the payment by giving a check to the painter
or paying online. We aim to provide convenient payment options to ensure a smooth and
straightforward process for our customers.

DOES THE CREW EXPECT A TIP AT THE END OF THE JOB?
Tips are not expected, but they are certainly welcome as a token of appreciation for a job well
done by our dedicated crew. Your satisfaction with the completed project is our primary focus,
and any acknowledgment, including tips, is graciously accepted.

I’M CONCERNED ABOUT WATER LEAKS INTO THE HOUSE. WILL PAINTING SOLVE
THESE ISSUES?
Addressing water leaks requires identifying their root cause before determining the appropriate
solution. Painting is not a likely remedy for leakage issues. For minor leaks near windows and
doors, caulking to seal edges may help, but it’s essential to understand and address the
underlying cause for a more effective and lasting solution.

WHAT IF DRY ROT OR OTHER CARPENTRY ISSUES ARE DISCOVERED DURING THE
PAINTING PROCESS?
While we aim to identify carpentry issues during the estimation process, some may be
concealed or not easily visible. In such cases, discoveries might occur during surface

preparation. If unexpected issues like dry rot are found during the painting process, we’ll
promptly inform you, presenting available options along with associated costs. We prioritize
transparency, and no additional costs will be incurred without your explicit consent. Our goal is
to ensure a durable coating and keep you informed throughout the project.
