Historic Restoration with Farrow & Ball Paints

Project: Exterior restoration and painting of the Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center in Nyack NY. The 1858 Federal Hopper House with Queen Anne additions (1882/mid 1890s) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the museum is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s prestigious Historic Artists Homes & Studios coalition.

Process: The CertaPro team was tasked to refurbish the birthplace and boyhood home of the iconic American artist and preeminent realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967), while maintaining the original mid 19th-century character of the property.  The CertaPro team began by carefully scraping all loose and failing paint, sanding smooth and washing the house, followed by spot priming the areas of bare wood.  Then CertaPro Painters applied a full prime coat of Farrow & Ball exterior primer followed by two coats of Farrow and Ball Exterior Paint.

Product Used: In keeping with the colors of the original historic house, the choice was made to use Farrow & Ball white and light tones exterior primer; Farrow & Ball Pointing for the body of the house; Farrow & Ball Studio Green for the front door, front shutters and front porch railings: Farrow & Ball Cromarty for the front porch ceiling and Farrow & Ball Hopper was used on the porch floor.  All paints were Exterior Eggshell finish.

Results: Client had a hard deadline in advance of their annual spring fundraising event, so CertaPro provided a 5- person crew to ensure timely completion.  The weather was very cooperative as well.  We also worked on the front porch areas on days the museum was not open to the public to minimize any inconvenience.  Finally, extra care was taken to protect the landscaping and remove as many paint chips as possible.  All stakeholders were very pleased with the process and the outcome.

The Museum recently embarked on a long overdue major exterior capital improvement to the Edward Hopper House, a historical treasure of Nyack, NY, as preserving the family home of the American artist is a centerpiece of our mission. CertaPro carefully and expertly repainted the entire exterior of the two- story clapboard and shingle sided building using Farrow & Ball Paints. We were on a tight timeline to complete this project before our annual spring fundraising event. The CertaPro team made sure we were a high priority, made us all feel comfortable every step of the way, and finished the project on schedule and with plenty of time to spare. The prep work was very detailed, as was the painting and the Farrow & Ball paints look lovely and historically appropriate on our historic house. In working together, this project resulted in an important improvement to our facility and to the village streetscape. We would highly recommend CertaPro Painters.
