Interior Painting Basics

Posted on February 9, 2024

We here at CertaPro Painters® of West Hartford, CT know that our customers don’t like surprises – but we also know that they don’t want to navigate through lengthy contracts or sit through a whole hour session on what could happen on their job.

For customers who want to be better prepared and want to think through different scenarios, We’ve compiled this list of essential interior painting basics for you!

INTERIOR PAINTING BASICS

PREPARING ROOMS:  Before the first day of painting, please prepare whatever rooms we are painting by doing the following:

  • Remove all pictures and paintings off the walls (leave nails in if you plan to re-hang pictures in the same spot)
  • Take out unwanted nails so the holes can be filled
  • Remove all small and fragile objects (tables, shelves and floors should be empty)
  • Clean out all closets/cabinets/etc. that we are painting, and remove all window treatments. If you’re unable to do this ahead of time, we’d be happy to do this work for you if requested!

WINDOW TREATMENTS / SWITCHPLATES:  Let your crew leader know if you are planning to rehang the window treatments or if you plan on replacing them. This way they know to leave the necessary brackets, or if they can remove and spackle behind them. Similarly. let your crew leader know if you are keeping the switch plates, or replacing them.

PETS: Please be sure that your pets are unable to access the rooms that we are painting while they are being worked on. It is very easy to bump into a recently painted wall or kick up dust and ruin several hours of trim painting.

CLEAN-UP: We do a surface clean-up after we wrap up each day and a full clean-up upon completion of the job. Please be aware that to do the aggressive spackling and sanding job that we prefer for a quality job, a fair amount of dust is created.

COLOR CONSULTATION:
Before we start, you will have to choose your color. If you would like to replicate a color already on your wall, you can use an old can of paint for reference, or you can take a chip to the paint store. We can help you identify the color, the finish, and type of paint with our visualizer tools, and we also offer color consulting service if you need help coming to a decision.
