Paint Colors to Make a Room Feel Bigger

Small spaces often pose the biggest challenges when it comes to interior design and decor. And living in the Upper West Side is all about small places! Rather than going through the trouble of finding out what color works best for a particular room, most people just paint it white. But that doesn’t have to be your case. Eggshell

White is a tried and true color in small spaces because it is understood to make the room look bigger. The truth is, sometimes this shade can give the opposite effect. A white wall can often be too bright, and simultaneously cast unexpected shadows in corners. Eggwhite, however, removes some of that intensity and shrinking shadows. Keeping in mind the angles of the walls and lighting sources, eggshell white can add warmth to a room, while still making it look brighter and bigger.

Teal

Sometimes rules have more exceptions than we can even mention. Such is the case with paint colors and small rooms. Many interior painting experts will tell you to avoid dark colors in small spaces. This is because they effectively reduce the appearance in size. However, if you choose paints with the right undertones, darker colors can actually make the room look bigger. A deep, not-too-dark, blue-green hue like teal can mask shadows and create the perception of depth you’re looking for.

Beige

It’s hard to go wrong with a neutral color. Beige can be just the right fit if you want to keep things simple without having to resort to the starkness of white, . These are colors that have been proven to set the perfect tone for whatever design inspiration you want to apply in a room. Rich, subtle tones like beige or taupe have the potential to make a room look bigger and feel more elegant without much effort.

Yellow

Be advised that every yellow won’t work. This cheerful shade can often be too overwhelming on the eyes, especially in a small room. A toned down shade like lemon, however, can add a welcoming feel to your space. Without being too harsh on the eyes, the right shade of yellow creates a light and airy atmosphere. It also creates the perception of a bigger room.

Dark Navy

We’re breaking the dark colors rule once more. If you have a room that receives little to no natural light, a dark navy shade can create the perception of depth and stature you’re looking for. Dark hues like this, paired with furniture of similar shades, can allow for lines and edges to blur. Thus, it makes the room feel more elegant and far bigger.
