How often should you paint an exterior of your home
Posted on May 27, 2021
There is no one standard answer to the question how often should I paint an exterior of my home. Every home is unique so you will need to assess your house to make an accurate decision. However, we can offer these standard questions to ask yourself when deciding if it’s time to give the exterior of your home a little refresh!
When to paint your exterior
What is the exterior of your home made from?
The substrate structure can make a huge difference in how often to paint an exterior. Homes made from more durable substrates like brick, aluminum or wooden siding or stucco can last varying lengths of time while remaining protective and looking great. Specifically, bricks can last between 15 and 20 years between repainting. Vinyl or aluminum siding requires very specific preparations and knowledge, but when painted can last an additional 5 to 10 years. Stucco is about 5 to 6 years. Wooden siding is between 3 and 6 years if painted, or about 4 years if stained.
How much wear is there?
Proper repairs, preparation and maintenance can allow your paint to last longer between reapplying. Your exterior paint will alert you when it’s time for attention. Look for wear and tear on your exterior in the form of peeling, chalking, bubbling or cracking. These are all signs that your home needs some repairs before larger issues fester under the surface. Once these signs are present, the costs to repair and repaint will only go up the longer you wait.
Do you feel as though every time you get a glimpse of the outside of your home you think it looks lifeless or dull?
When paint begins to fail, it usually takes on a noticeable dinginess. The color will seem less vibrant and discoloration may occur. Now is the time to approach painting companies and make your plan for work.
