When the Paint Color is Wrong

Posted on August 2, 2019

It can take quite a bit to gear up for a paint job, now that you’re here, don’t rush into your job if the paint feels wrong. Here’s what you can do when the paint color is wrong.

It was the perfect swatch, chosen with consideration. Now that you’re home, the color is all wrong. Don’t make a faux paus. Here are some options for you to correct the issue.

Mixing

When you open your paint can at home, it’s possible that the color could have been mixed wrong. Stir it with a stick and see if it still looks off. If you realize this before you begin to paint, it’s a nuisance, but consider bringing it back to the store before you start. It’s better to correct the issue now.

Lighting

Once you have painted the walls, it’s easy for a lightbulb to change the look of your paint completely. With new ultra bright and neon bulbs, paint tends to take on a blue tint. If your paint looks tinted a bit wrong, try adjusting the bulbs before you give up on your color completely. Dimmer switches, warm light bulbs and natural lighting can change your color tremendously.

Accessories

Accessories that were not taken into account when you chose your color can give off shades onto the newly painted walls. A bright throw or deep couch can cause a lighter color to take on the feel of the brighter color. Try switching out the items for ones closer to the hue you’re looking for. Make sure when you shop, the lighting in the store is similar to what you’re working with at home.

Faux Paint Techniques

Textures and faux painting can help your color be more what you were hoping for. Pick a warmer or cooler color to texture over your original color to warm or cool the paint to the feeling you were looking for. Dab the color up until you get what you’re looking for.

Repaint

If you cannot correct the problem to your liking, it’s a last resort but you can paint again. If you find yourself wincing every time you enter the room, it may be the best option. Make sure you test the new color on a posterboard before you commit. Then move it around the room and look at it in different lighting. This will help you avoid another paint disaster.
