What Paint do I use in my Bathroom?
Posted on August 11, 2019
Bathrooms are tricky little places when it comes to paint. Colors and finishes can make or break this room. Even so, paint should never have to hold up to the dampness and humidity of a bathroom, but we need it to. With that, many homeowners are asking, what paint do I use in my bathroom?
• Cleaning
The first consideration when choosing bathroom paint is how messy are your walls. Are we looking at a master bath with a fairly clean couple? Or is a room full of pre-teens slopping toothpaste and hair gel all over the place? The sheen you choose will provide you either a little or a lot of cleaning power.
Generally speaking, the shinier the finish on the paint, the easier it will be to scrub spills off. It will also stand up to moisture better. Semi-gloss is the most often chosen finish since the moisture will not affect it. If you are painting a less used bathroom – like a guest bath – more than likely you’d be fine with an eggshell or satin finish.
• Flat vs. Matte
Some bathrooms are not suited for the shine that comes with a semi-gloss finish. Flat or matte finishes will provide less luster in the room, but they also run the risk of failing due to the water absorption. Some manufacturers have flat or matte options that can stand up to the humidity of an often-used bathroom, but the jury is still out on how long they will last and look good for.
• Extra Offers
There are several paints offered on shelves that have added bonuses for your bathroom. Some brands have paints and finishes that will prevent mildew and other waterborne issues. Behr, Valspar and Benjamin Moore all have options that will prevent or kill mildew before it starts. This can offer you extra piece of mind in your bathroom paint.
