Problems with Stucco in the Desert

Posted on October 8, 2020

The rugged simplicity of stucco can be the perfect for a desert home, but it can still come with its challenges. While you won’t likely experience rain ruining the work, other similar problems can arise. Yes, even in the desert. Here are some of the problems with stucco in the desert.

Cracking and Crumbling

Crumbling and cracking in stucco can occur due to age, pest infestations, settling, water damage, vibrations, shifting soil, and even improper stucco installation. Far too often, the application of stucco in the desert dries too quickly in the high heat and direct sunlight, not allowing it to dry and set properly between coats, and causing it to disintegrate gradually.

And as more stucco crumbles each time, the stucco integrity itself is breached and additional moisture can seep inside. Even if the rain is not a concern where you live, exposed crevices are still an open invitation for other pests, like termites, to squeeze through, and make your home theirs.

Moisture

Although it seldom rains in the desert, when it does, it causes chaos. Just half an inch can send waters gushing through miles of flood channels throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Due to the steep mountainous landscape surrounding the valley and the fact that the ground is extremely dry for most of the year, surface runoff often leads to flash floods.

Even if it’s only a few times a year, if enough water gets in the stucco without any way of evaporating can cause cracks in the stucco or blistering paint. In the worst cases, trapped moisture can reach the foundation of your home and cause havoc on supporting wood structures.

Application

For a proper and long-lasting result, applying or painting stucco in the desert can take a while. If you don’t want lapping, or uneven coating, the project should be spread over a couple of days. It’s preferable to avoid monsoon season.

While it can be unbelievably hot during the day, desert nights can bring temperatures down to the 30s. Uncured stucco should be held at above 50 degrees for proper application. While stucco in the dessert doesn’t face many of the same problems as other places, it can still be susceptible to other factors. This can put in jeopardy its stability and cohesion, and should be protected.
