Home Painters Las Vegas: Repair Holiday Wall Damage

Posted on December 18, 2019

Now that the holiday decor is being put away, have you run into unexpected damage to your walls? Bumps on walls and damage from hooks crop up when the decorations are pulled off the walls. You don’t want to start the new year with banged up walls! Here’s how to repair holiday damage on the walls, from our home painters Las Vegas.

Prep

Sand the wall down to an even surface. If adhesive remains, remove it completely. If you took a chip from the paint, scrape any loose pieces around the broken drywall. Brush down the area with a dry cloth to remove the dust.

Use a waterproof primer on the wall if the top paper layer of the drywall has been ripped away. This keeps the paint from seeping into the wall and blistering if your home gets humid over the summer. Use the manufacturer’s directions on the primer and allow ample time to dry before moving on.

Repair

Fill in any divots or holes with drywall paste and a putty knife. Once the hole is full, use the flat end of the knife to remove extra paint and even out the finish. Fill the hole evenly with the wall. Give it plenty of dry time then reinspect the area. If there are any imperfections, now is the time to correct them. Use drywall paste to fill if necessary.

Prime

Now apply a standard primer over the repaired areas. Skipping this step could make the paint show your repair through it. Using the primer ensures the paint will dry the same on the drywall and the repair. Give the primer full time to dry – according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Now you can paint over the repairs. Blend the edges of the paint with the existing wall. Once it’s dry, add a second coat of paint. After the drying is complete, use bright light to see if the repaired areas show through. You may have to add a final coat to the entire wall.
