Garage Painting Tips and Tricks

Posted on February 23, 2022

Style wise, the garage door doesn’t get a lot of love beyond the purchase of the home. When renovating or choosing new color palettes for your house, don’t forget to give some love to the garage doors. They are a large section of the home and should be incorporated, not forgotten. Garage painting can be done conjunction with a house painting or on its own. This is particularly important if you are considering selling your home and want to boost your curb appeal to draw in buyers.

A simple addition of paint and hardware can make a huge difference in the look of your house. Here are a few tips and tricks from our professionals to take with you on this endeavor.

Garage Floor

Consider Epoxy: Epoxy floor coating is made of a number of additives, such as epoxide resin and polyamine hardener. As the materials are mixed, a firm and thick bond is created that offers a unique level of stability and endurance. Be certain, though, that an epoxy garage floor coating is not paint. Some paints contain epoxy because of its numerous benefits, but the opposite does not apply. Many people use epoxy for their home’s garage or high-traffic business areas.

Check for Moisture: If your slab was poured with no underlying vapor barrier, or you have high ground water, or you have no idea, you could need an extra layer of sealant. To check for these issues, tape a 2 foot square of clear plastic over a piece of the concrete. Check it after 24 hours. Look for darkening of the concrete or water drops under the plastic. If you find either, proceed with an epoxy sealer that will prevent further moisture.

Walls and Ceiling

Test Your Paint Color: The paint you choose will look different in different times of day and different light sources. It’s a good idea to paint a poster board with the color you potentially want to test it. Put it in the space and have a look at it during different times of day, in different lights and against different walls.

Don’t Be Afraid of Color: It’s important to make a cohesive look for your garage, but that does not mean it needs to be boring. If you intend to use your garage to store a vehicle, use that as an inspiration for the room. Count it as an accessory color, if not a main one. Clearly you liked it enough to purchase a car in it. Other ways to include a color are bright cabinets or patterns.

Garage Door

Care for the Hardware: Adding new hardware to the door is the finishing touch for this project. If your door had handles or any other hardware on the front of it, get some replacement items for a fully-finished look. You’ll be surprised at the difference between the new door you’ve painted and the old one you had.

Careful Techniques: When painting the door, you should use an angled brush to cut in any areas that are difficult to paint. These include the borders of the door, any embossing or crack and crannies that could be missed later. Next, use a roller or sprayer to apply the paint to the rest of the garage door. For sprayers, make sure you are working with tape and drop cloths to catch over spray. For rollers, use a small nap to avoid too much texture being left behind.
