ProBlock Primer, an Alkyd Primer by Sherwin Williams

Posted on March 14, 2019

ProBlock Primer by Sherwin Williams is an alkyd primer, which is basically an oil-based primer. Oil based primers are recommend when you have or need one of the following:

  • Block stains
  • Faster drying times
  • Seal out water sensitive stains
  • Dried water stains
  • Smoke stains and related odors
  • Grease or oil stains
  • Ink stains
  • Pencil stains
  • Crayon marks
  • Nicotine staining
  • Wood tanning bleed (resin knots)
  • Previously stained surfaced
  • Soot stains
  • Paraffin staining
  • Previously wallpapered surfaces
  • And under certain circumstances, rooms with strong odors

Oil-based primers are excellent options for sealing tannin bleed from redwood and cedar, along with sealing wood surfaces containing knots. We highly recommend priming walls with oil-based primers prior to painting rooms that were previously wallpapered. We also recommend priming previously stained wood surfaces (stained baseboards, trim, and doors, with oil-based primers.
