The Art of Latte Art

Posted on December 8, 2017

Ever sit down at a coffee shop and see art in your latte?  The unexpected flower or animal floating can be a nice surprise.

The figures are made when pouring milk into a shot of espresso.  When pouring, the artist uses the steam to draw on the latte’s surface.  This can be tricky and requires a steady hand to keep the liquids from mixing.

The art form originates from Italy and became popular in Seattle during the 1980s.  David Schomer popularized latte art in the United States.  He owns Espresso Vivace, a renowned coffee shop where he teaches this art method.  People from around the world attend courses. David has also worked to improve espresso machines and milk foaming techniques.

David is known for the classic rosette pattern.  But some baristas have gone outside this pattern and stepped up to the art latte challenge.
