Severna Park Painters: Paint Your Walls, Change Your Mood, Science Proves It

Posted on February 19, 2020

Severna Park painters from CertaPro Painters® explain through science how colors affect moods. Pink is calming, blue is tranquil and white is clean. If you’re considering a wall color change, now might be the time to look further into the side effects of colors in rooms. Paint your walls, change your mood and here’s the science that proves it.

A painting company in Australia partnered with a Virtual Reality(VR) producer and a team of psychologists to test color and moods together as they pertain to the environment people live in.
Google Daydream VR headsets were provided to over 700 volunteers for the experiment. They were programmed to show five paint colors in three different types of rooms. After seeing each option, the user was asked how they felt from a range of emotions like cheerful, excited or tense. They reported the feeling and intensity. Because VR is a more realistic feeling, the users were able to report more realistic outcomes versus just pictures of rooms in the colors. The immersion into reality allowed the users to feel more real feelings to report.

The Results Are In

Different Color Paints for MoodPastels in green, blue and purple gave the users a feeling of calmness while brights in the yellow, pink and orange families were said to cause excitement. Darker rooms, while in vogue for quite a few seasons, were reported to cause feelings of sadness and depression.

Not every dark color caused this reaction. Accents in the colors didn’t negatively affect any users. Consider painting only an accent wall if you are opting for dark and vivid colors. The research studied not only home environments, but retail and restaurant spaces as well. So what did the colors do?
