Five Home Improvement Projects To Do This Fall

Posted on September 25, 2019

Now is the perfect time to head into the outdoors and get your house ready for the winter months. Use the last few warm days to tackle some ongoing projects outside. Here are 5 home improvement projects to do this fall.

Roof

Let’s start at the top. Get out the ladder and head onto the roof for a once over. Now is the time to fix any issues you see. The roof is the first line of defense against the elements. Missing or loose shingles should be addressed before ice and snow take up residence up there. Waiting for winter to set in and show off the deficiencies is not an option.

Chimneys

Your chimney is sure to see a lot of roaring fires this winter. Having it swept and prepared for the season is imperative to avoid potential fires. Sealing or painting a chimney could be in order if there are any issues with the paint in place.

Windows

Upgrading your windows could save you a load over the winter, but it might not be in the budget right now. At the very least, go over your windows and frames and make sure there are no gaping areas that could use a repair. Some caulk and time could save you from chills and drafts that creep in over the cooler months. Addressing these now will keep you warm and snuggly inside with no fear of the frigid temperatures.

Walls

While you’re inspecting the exterior of your home, look over your walls for any signs of visible damage or wear and tear. If you have discoloration or signs of mildew or mold, you’ll want to remove them before you pack up for the winter. Cracks in stucco or wood should be repaired to keep moisture out. Caulk and stucco repairs are fairly simple and can give you piece of mind that your home is secure from pests and wetness.

Paint

While paint enhances the look of your home, it also does a lot to protect it. It’s the first line of defense against the elements outside. A fresh coat of paint provides a layer of security against critters, crawlies, wet and cold. The film does more to avoid intrusion of bugs and moisture than any repellent or sealing could do.

Peripherals

Now is a good time of the year to get your decks and other wood peripheral structures ready to endure the winter. Any last minute painting or sealing to protect the wood from snow should be completed before the weather turns. Because wood is so easily damaged by water, a good seal or paint coating will keep it protected throughout the harsh season.
