If You Want to Sell Your Home Avoid These Colors
Posted on January 30, 2022
Selling your home can be a huge endeavor. It can cause a lot of stress and worry. But there are ways to avoid these unnecessary burdens by doing your research and being prepared for matters of contention that may arise.
The best way to prepare your home to be sold is to know what colors & styles homeowners are looking for. Of course, you cannot please everyone, but you can create color palettes in your home that are appealing to most people, or at least not unappealing to most homeowners.
Paint provides the “first impression” of a home. If buyers are immediately welcomed into your home by an odd or ugly color, it can have the power to turn away these potential buyers regardless of how beautiful the home or its architecture is. When real estate website Zillow Digs analyzed photos of 50,000 recently sold homes, they found those with rooms painted in certain colors tended to command higher selling prices than expected.
Although the color of paint on the walls may suit you and your family’s personality, you have to consider if it is neutral enough to suit others. You want potential buyers to be able to envision themselves living in the space.
Here are the colors you should avoid if you want your home to sell.
Dark Grays, Blacks, Browns
Gray happens to be a very popular color lately. But if you will notice, most of the popular grays being used are mostly light grays or almost silver hues. No matter how large a room is, dark colors on the walls can cause a room to look much smaller and less welcoming than lighter colors.
Darker colors can be used to create a very pretty room, but you need to save that for painting your home when you don’t intend to sell anytime soon. It is always better to use lighter colors when selling your home. You want your house to appear bright, welcoming and airy.
White or Eggshell White
Shades of white might seem like a safe bet when you’re at color samples, but they aren’t guaranteed to be a favorite with home buyers. Homes with off-white or eggshell kitchens sold for $82 less than Zillow estimated they would. Instead, people reported they loved kitchens with a coat of wheat yellow paint on the walls, which boosted a home’s selling price by $1,360.
Any Shade of Orange
Lately, shades of tangerine and terracotta may be trendy, but when it comes to selling your home, it’s best to skip the trends. Trends change very quickly and you may be stuck with a very untrendy home that won’t sell. Also, surveys show that orange is one of the least liked colors in the world.
Some people suggest using muted shades of these colors can improve their popularity. But it is best just to avoid them altogether when trying to sell. Home buyers will only see the work they have to put into repainting the walls.
Wallpaper
It is not a type of paint, but still needs to be mentioned. Wallpaper is becoming trendy again. You can find samples of big, loudly designed wallpaper in most of the home decor magazines today. But if you are trying to sell, as mentioned above, following trends is not a path you should take. Wallpaper is great if you are planning on staying in your home, but not if you plan to resell any time soon.
When you sell your home, you need to appeal to a wide range of buyers, not just your own personal taste. Going too far in the “trendy” direction can cause buyers to be put off. When in doubt, stick with classic styles that stand the test of time.
