How to Brighten an Office with No Windows
Posted on May 25, 2024
If we all had our way, we’d have large spacious offices that surround us with natural light and warm glows. Since that’s not reality, many of us end up stuck in cubicles or windowless offices. If your work or home office is of the latter description, don’t worry. You might lack natural light but you can enhance the warmth in your office with paint and accessories. Here’s how to brighten an office with no windows.
Offices with Windows or Windowed Doors
Windowless rooms give you a few challenges for decorating your space. Structural changes like adding a door with windows can make a huge impact on the room. Windows in the wall can also help brighten things up. While most office buildings aren’t keen on structural changes for the sake of light. These changes can be pricey or near impossible. If you are met with a resounding no, don’t worry, there are other options.
Pick a Paint Color
In rooms that don’t have any natural light, you can feel a bit like working in a cave. Switching the paint color on the walls is one way to add color and light to the room. While choosing a bright white with fluorescent lighting can make the room feel stark and overbearing, choosing a warm white with yellow or amber lights can add warmth and light. Pick a white with undertones of pink or yellow to make sure the outside light feels like it can get in.
Change Office Lighting
Fluorescent lighting makes a room feel dark and dull, every single time. Avoid the overhead lights altogether by adding warm bulbs to lamps instead. If you are required to use the overhead lights, change the fluorescent bulbs to those that give off a more natural, yellow light. When used in conjunction with lamps, you’ll end up with a warm glow that mimics the sun.
Illusion of Windows
Fake it till you make it, right? If you aren’t privy to windows in your office, create a faux outside view with some artwork. Give the impression of a window with a piece of art shaped like a window on the wall. Add some drapes to the side to finish the look. This will simultaneously make your office feel bigger and warmer.
Use Mirrors to Bounce Light
Mirrors, when placed appropriately, can work to move what little light you have in the room around. It creates a visual key that the room is bigger than the square footage too.
Use Natural Elements
Plants can make your room feel warmer since they need sunlight to grow. Putting them in your office triggers your brain to think the room is warm and bright. Choose plants that work well in low-light areas and thrive without sunlight. These can include snake plants, prayer plants, and some varieties of ferns or palms.
