What We Do When Painting a High Ceiling

Posted on November 28, 2021

There are so many benefits to painting a high ceiling. A proper coat of paint can make a room feel larger, cozier, or warmer depending on what color you choose. It is called the fifth wall for a reason! Unfortunately, most homeowners are not aware of all the benefits ceiling painting provides. And if they do, they see the task as daunting and ultimately unattainable. Our professionals, however, have painted high ceilings for multiple years and know all the tips and tricks.

In this article, our team made a list of three things our ceiling painters do to make the process a little easier. Our tried-and-true practice has helped thousands of homeowners create the homes of their dreams––you could be next!

Prep the Room

The first step to getting a great ceiling finish is to do the proper preparation work. Ultimately, there isn’t much difference between painting a ceiling and painting a wall. We make sure to protect your furniture with tarps, wear the proper safety equipment, and clean the surface well. Because of the nature of the job, we typically put down more drop cloths than we would for a simple wall painting. We also wear hats so paint does not drip into our hair––a great practice if you plan to do this project yourself! Tape is also our best friend. We use painter’s tape to cover the tops of walls where the crown molding is.

Use the Right Tools

There are different tools our team utilizes for different types of ceilings. If we are working in really large rooms, a scaffold might be of benefit. Scaffolds offer a sturdy surface to hold painters and their painting tools. The downside to a scaffold is the equipment is cumbersome and difficult to move from wall to wall. If you want to take on a high ceiling painting project, be sure to take extra precaution. Some hardware stores will have scaffolding set ups available for rent or purchase. Make sure it is not only completely assembled, but locked into place and immobile before you attempt to climb on it.

Use the Right Paint

Our professionals make sure to take extra care to choose the right paint for each ceiling. While this is a true practice for us, those who do paint projects on their own could have a harder time. With so many options out there, it can be hard to know which paint is the right paint for your project. The first step is to look specially for ceiling paint. If you can find a ceiling paint that includes paint and primer in one, you’ll be in even better shape.

You’ll also want to make sure you’re buying the right paint color for the room you’re painting. White paint can brighten rooms that don’t have much natural light, but a room with high ceilings may benefit from a cozier, darker color. If you’re not sure which type of ceiling paint or ceiling paint color is right for you, get in touch with the professionals.
