CertaPro’s Bathroom Painting Tips

Posted on April 1, 2022

The days are getting longer. The weather is warming up. Spring is definitely here. Spring brings with it a sense of renewal. We begin opening up our windows and cleaning off our decks. Spring is also a great time to take on a home improvement project or two. If you are inexperienced with home projects, you may think, “a great place to start is by refreshing & repainting the bathroom.”

Bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side so usually bathroom painting projects rarely take more than a weekend to complete. However, bathrooms have a lot of immobile fixtures & appliances you must paint around & sometimes you could be painting in a very cramped space. So just because it is small, does not mean it is easy.

If you are an experienced DIYer, you may try to paint all your bathrooms at the same time and as one project. This is a great idea as far as planning goes, but if you are a beginner, you may want to begin with one of your smaller bathrooms with fewer nooks and crannies for your first painting project. Or you can choose to let your CertaPro painters take care of the work. Your money will be well spent. Then you can breathe easy knowing the job will turn out great & exactly as expected. CertaPro’s painting pros are here to help.

But if you insist on DIY-ing it, Here are bathroom painting tips from CertaPro Painters:

  1. Clean Thoroughly, then Dry It Out

In a room that always has humidity and dampness, how do you begin painting it?

Only one way; dry it out. Begin by making the bathroom off-limits prior to painting. Scrub the entire room. You will need to clean the walls several times prior to painting. First, use a dry towel, then a broom or vacuum nozzle to remove dust and lint from the room. Then use a wet mixture of TSP to remove soap and scum residue from the walls.

Make sure to check for cracks, peeling, and other issues while preparing & cleaning.

After thoroughly cleaning the room & addressing any structural issues, allow a solid 2 to 3 days for the moisture to evaporate and the bathroom to completely dry out. This will allow the paint to adhere and dry correctly.
  1. Take Off the Tank

Do not paint around appliances like toilets and tubs. You think no one will notice the prior color behind the toilet tank, but they will. Your painting job must look professional to maintain your home’s value.

Although it can be time-consuming, it will make the job much easier by removing the toilet tank. This will allow you access to the hidden part of the wall so you can paint behind the toilet.

To take the tank off, first, turn off the water at the base of the toilet. Flush it to remove the water currently in the tank. It’s a good idea to place some towels around the toilet on the floor to catch any remaining water. Unscrew the tank and pull it off.

In the end, it will look like a professional paint job &  you will be thankful you did such a thorough job.
  1.  Use Specialized Paint

If your bathroom stays wet more than dry. This can cause it to begin collecting mildew. There are specialty paints on the market that offer a mildew-killing and prevention additive within the paint. There are usually several options available.

Some of these paint types contain chemicals making it impossible for the mildew to form. While others create a solid barrier so water cannot remain on the walls. This paint may be more costly but it will protect your bathroom from embarrassing mold for years to come.
  1. Use the Correct Paint finish

Should you use flat, semi-gloss, or glossy paint in the bathroom? One of the worst mistakes you can make is using the wrong paint finish in your bathroom.

Do your research and choose a paint and finish that works well in a wet room. Most professionals suggest a glossy or semi-gloss finish. These finishes provide an extra layer of protection to keep the moisture from penetrating the paint.

If you want your bathroom painted, but are not ready to tackle the task CertaPro painters are experts and know how to transform your bathroom into a relaxing retreat. We will help you choose the right colors, plan the project and create the palette for your dream bathroom.
