Why Refinish your Cabinets?

Cabinets are among the most touched surfaces in your home. It is recommended cabinets be repainted about every 10-15 years or re-stained about every 20-30 years. When a finish wears down or is damaged on your cabinets it exposes the wood underneath. Over time in this state, wood can warp and even rot as it’s exposed to moisture, temperature, and light. If your cabinets are not old and/or worn, perhaps you are just be looking for a change. Maybe you’re trying to match your cabinets to new countertops or appliances. Whatever your reason for refinishing your cabinets, CertaPro Painters® of Rochester, MI has you covered.

How long will it take?

How long it takes to refinish your cabinets depends on a number of factors. We offer three different options for where we will paint your cabinets. We can paint them where they are installed, or if it’s more convenient we can move them to another place in your home, like a garage, or even off-site. Other factors include how many cabinets are being painted, the condition of the existing paint, etc. It will typically take anywhere from a couple of days to one week to complete the job.

Paint or Stain?

So should you paint your cabinets or stain them? Each has its pros and cons in both aesthetics and future-proofing. What’s best for you? Here are a few differences in color and durability that may help in your decision. And if you’re looking for a little help in picking the right color for your cabinets, we also offer Color Consultation Services.

– Color –

Paint: There’s no doubt that paint offers more choice in color, all of them in fact. Since you’ll be painting on top of the cabinet surface there are no limitations. Although by painting, the wood grain will be covered up,

Stain: Staining allows for the grain of the wood to be shown off. If you’re looking for a natural feel, staining will be your best bet. However, since the process of staining is color being absorbed into the wood, you will have fewer color options.

– Durability –

Paint: Over time paint can wear down and start to crack or peel, and is more susceptible to damage such as chips or scratches.

Stain: Because of the coating involved when finishing a stain, staining provides you with greater resistance to damage and moisture. It can still chip and wear, however.
