Residential Deck Staining Case Study

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT

In June 2025, CertaPro Painters® of Roanoke, VA, completed an exterior deck restoration project for a home in Roanoke, VA. The deck had suffered from years of exposure to the elements without regular maintenance or protective treatments.

Luis and Marbel’s crew began by power washing all surfaces to remove grime, mold, and debris. Loose or peeling paint was thoroughly scraped, failing caulk was replaced, and bare spots were spot-primed to ensure a proper base for the new coatings.

To restore the wood’s natural integrity and improve stain adhesion, we applied Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck® Revive to the porch flooring, stairs, and stair handrails. This specialized wood brightener helped clean, condition, and open the wood’s pores.

Additional project steps included: installing a few new pickets on the porch railing; priming the railings; painting the porch ceiling, trim, upper posts, handrails, and pickets with Sherwin-Williams Emerald® Urethane; and staining the porch floor, stairs, stair stringers, lower posts, handrails, and pickets using Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck® Semi-Solid Stain.

CHALLENGES

The use of SuperDeck Revive played a key role in rejuvenating the weathered wood. By lifting surface fibers and opening the pores, it allowed the stain to penetrate deeply, ensuring a richer color, better bonding, and longer-lasting protection.

PROJECT TIMELINE

The project was completed in 2 days.
