In November 2025, CertaPro Painters® of Roanoke, VA completed a residential garage floor coating project in Glade Hill, VA. The existing concrete floor showed visible wear, including discoloration, surface staining, and peeling coating in high-traffic areas. Although structurally sound, the uneven, patchy surface detracted from the garage’s overall appearance.
To begin, the garage was fully cleared to allow for proper surface preparation. A commercial floor grinder with a vacuum attachment was then used to remove the existing coating and profile the concrete. After grinding was complete, the floor was thoroughly cleaned to remove all dust and debris.
Next, the epoxy system was applied in stages. First, a base coat was installed, followed by decorative color flakes selected by the homeowner. A protective finish coat was applied the following day. The coating required 48 hours before light foot traffic was permitted and 14-21 days to fully cure. During this time, the homeowner was advised to keep vehicle tires straight when entering or exiting the garage to prevent surface damage. Finally, the garage walls were painted using Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint® in a satin finish.
Throughout the process, proper surface preparation remained critical to the project’s success. The concrete was mechanically ground to remove the old coating, open the pores of the surface, and create the correct profile for epoxy adhesion. Multiple passes ensured a consistent texture, with additional attention given to edges and high-traffic areas to support long-term performance.
