How to Paint the Exterior of Your Home in Winter

Owner Lisa Allardi of CertaPro Painters Roanoke, VA was featured in a recent article on Better Homes & Gardens. Lisa, along with other industry professionals, shared insights on exterior painting during colder months, including how temperature, moisture, and proper surface preparation can impact the success of a project. Her input emphasized the importance of carefully monitoring conditions and using the right materials when painting in winter. Here’s what Lisa had to say:

“Preparation is crucial for any painting project, particularly in winter. All exterior surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned before painting, as hidden contaminants can remain even on surfaces that look clean. If a surface is glossy, applying a primer or sanding might be necessary,”

“Most people have smartphones to check current temperatures and humidity levels. We monitor these conditions carefully, beginning projects later in the day until surface and air temperatures meet the ideal ranges. We complete painting within the recommended hours to make sure proper drying before temperatures drop too low,”

“Generally, December, January, and February are the coldest months, and we tend to do less exterior painting during these times, choosing to wait until spring,”

As a team, we continually stay up to date with new tools and innovations to deliver a smoother, more efficient, and enjoyable painting experience.
