Choosing a Paint Grade for Long-Lasting Results

Choosing a quality paint is the best way to update your home or business while saving money in the long run, but there’s a difference between paint brand and paint grade. A paint brand, like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore, refers to the company that manufactures the paint, but within each brand, there are different grades of paint that vary in quality. Premium paint grades provide better coverage, resist fading, are more durable and environmentally friendly, and reduce the need for repainting as often. Consider these factors when deciding to use a high or low-quality paint grade:

  • Washability – Can the paint be easily cleaned without losing its finish?
  • Colour Retention – Will the paint resist fading over time?
  • Durability – Is the paint resistant to wear, scuffs, and scratches?
  • Coverage – Does the paint cover the surface effectively with fewer coats?
  • Low Odor – Does the paint minimize strong smells during application?
  • Environmental Friendliness – What are the paint’s VOC levels (volatile organic compounds) and its environmental impact?

Taking these factors into account ensures that you choose a paint that not only looks great but also stands the test of time.

Your Professional Painters in Richmond Hill & Vaughan, ON

Residents and business owners in the Richmond Hill area know that planning painting projects ahead of time is crucial due to dramatic changes in climate throughout the seasons. Exterior painting should be scheduled in the Spring, allowing homeowners and businesses to paint during the Summer when warm temperatures allow for better paint adhesion and drying times.

Cold winter months make outdoor painting impractical, so prioritizing interior projects during this time is best. Shorter days and fewer hours of daylight in Fall, Winter, and early Spring can limit outdoor painting hours, making indoor painting ideal. Thoughtful planning helps ensure the best results for both interior and exterior painting.

CertaPro Painters® of Richmond Hill & Vaughan, ON delivers exceptional, professional-quality painting results, no matter the season. Our expert teams follow a streamlined process, from scheduling your estimate to the final touches of your project.

Paint Sheen: Choosing The Best Paint Finish

When choosing a paint finish for your interior or exterior, consider how it may affect washability, durability, and how the colour is perceived:

  • Matte or flat: Ideal for ceilings and areas that won’t see a lot of wear, due to being less washable than other finishes. Flat paints hide imperfections very well.
  • Eggshell: A good balance between matte and gloss, this finish is common for interior walls and washes well.
  • Satin: Shinier than eggshell, this finish is best for subtly highlighting trim, especially for exteriors.
  • Semi-gloss: A high-sheen finish that is best for interior trim and high-visibility areas like front doors. It highlights surface imperfections more than other finishes.
  • High-Gloss: The highest sheen finish. Often sprayed on new doors and cabinets rather than painted to avoid showing imperfections like brush strokes.

The Benefits of Low and No VOC Paints

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are harmful airborne chemicals released by many conventional paints, which continue to emit odors and toxins long after the paint has dried. Low and No VOC paints significantly reduce or eliminate these emissions entirely, making them a healthier option for indoor environments. Low and No VOC paints are the best choice for homeowners looking to protect the health of their family and children, while also reducing their impact on the environment. For business owners, they eliminate the risk of allergic reactions from customers with respiratory sensitivities while reducing unpleasant odors in your restaurant or storefront.

Advantages of Low and No VOC Paints:

  • Healthier indoor air quality – Reduced exposure to harmful chemicals, which may cause allergic reactions, headaches, tiredness, or trouble breathing.
  • Virtually odorless – No strong fumes during or after painting, making the space more comfortable and safe to use immediately.
  • Environmentally friendly – Lower emissions contribute to reduced environmental pollution and a healthier planet.

These paints may require additional coats for full coverage and may have fewer colour options, however the health and environmental benefits far outweigh these minor costs.

The CertaPro team was on schedule, did a quality job along with a good clean up. I would definitely use them again.
