Exterior Painting For Garage Doors of All Types
Reston, VA has many homes with garage doors. Garage doors vary in what surface is on the exterior. Most commonly garage doors have aluminum as the exterior facing surfaces, however some older homes may use solid wood garage doors. In both cases they can be painted, however the prep, process, and products needed for the best result will change depending on the type of door you have. In our service area of the greater Reston, VA area, we are usually painting for aluminum doors.
How Garage Door Painting Projects Work
Prep: Prep is critically important to the paint adhering properly and for long lasting results. Metal surfaces need to carefully inspected for any areas where rust may be forming and dealt with prior to painting. Our team will treat any rusted areas, chips, or scratches with a wire brush and sanding equipment. Once the initial sanding is done, the door is cleaned with power washing equipment and let to dry. Once dry we tape off and areas around the door that should not get paint on them. We also usually disengage the electric opening system (if there is one) on doors to allow the team to easily move the door by hand into better positions for painting.
Prime: The type of primer, and tools used to apply primer will vary depending on the type of door you have. After completing the prime application let the prime fully dry and cure.
Paint: The final step is to paint the garage door, multiple coats may be needed depending on the condition of the door and how much the color is changing.
