Wooden Siding Home Painting Project in Northville, MI

For this project, the owner was looking to refresh the home they had recently moved into. It was a 2-story 4,000 sq. ft. home with full wood siding and trim, wrap-around porch, and large wood deck and a sunroom in the back.

The colors were dated and the previous owner had not maintained the property so that the wood siding was peeling, faded, and damaged. The large wrap-around front porch and back deck were also in poor shape and in need of repair and painting. Extensive carpentry work was required from the lack of maintenance in some hard-to-reach areas.

I loved the work the painters did and was impressed with everything as well. I have used this company in the past and will reccomend them to family and friends.

CHALLENGES:

The home first got a full powerwash to remove dirt and debris as well as any loose or peeling paint. We hand scraped the more troublesome areas like the porch and deck floor, and we primed all bare wood. Rotted trim was removed and replaced with new wood and any gaps were caulked as necessary before painting began. The new color scheme was a drastic change and required 3-4 coats on much of the home for full color coverage.

The dramatic color changes required multiple coats beyond the industry standard. We extensively masked areas that were to be sprayed to avoid over-spray with so many windows. Furthermore, we rebuild the upper dormer of the home, installing all new wood on this area well over 30 feet above the ground.

CONDITIONS:

The south side of the home was so significantly damaged by the sun that we found even 4 coats would not adequately cover. We put in a special order for a product (Resilience by Sherwin Williams) that has a much higher build in coverage and would create a more uniform look when sprayed on the siding. This saved the customer from having to fully reside the damaged areas and gave the old siding new life. We also pivoted mid-project on what we used on the porch and deck door, switching from a stain to the Porch and Floor Enamel product as a more durable solution in this case.

PROJECT INVOLVEMENT:

  • Paint – Required hand scraping and a full coat of primer.
  • Power wash – Create a clean surface for good paint adhesion.
